Errors can be costly — and the more you’re aware of the pitfalls, the better protected you’ll be!
There are certain events that can be helpful to run by a professional. A while back an alert client came to us for payroll consulting help before they signed a new employment agreement. Good thinking! That’s the right timing. Turns out that they were right: they didn’t know what they needed to know about vacation pay entitlements and statutory holiday pay.
Where could this have gone wrong? You don’t want to be stumbling over the rules with an employee who questions their entitlements. This can be especially problematic if you are doing so after the contract has been signed and if the relationship just happens to go sour, you wouldn’t want to be dealing with that person’s lawyer, figuring out compensation errors in retrospect.
As it was, we were able to work with the client to understand their particular set of circumstances, provide a personalized review and suggest an appropriate solution to keep them compliant with employment standards. While they had a lawyer look over their contract we helped them put those legal requirements into common terms in line with employment standards.
The gory technical details? Employment standards vary from province to province, and they can also change over time. We’re your on-call resource to ensure that you’re working with up to date, accurate information.
This client was able to hire their new staff member with confidence that they were applying the correct employment standards to the new hire.
